In an article for policymic.com titled Alaska Primary: Don Young Faces Two GOP Challengers, writer Michael Luciano tells his readers about the upcoming primary election in Alaska. The primary election is the political party choosing their candidate for the upcoming election. In this instance, the primary election is for the seat at the House of Representatives. The runners are John Cox, Terre Gales, and Don Young. Luciano states that Cox and Gales are no competition to the man who has had the job for years now, Don Young and will most likely win once again.
Michael Luciano wrote this article for one reason, and one reason and that is to educate his readers to the upcoming election. Luciano gives some subtle hints in who he is hoping to win in the election. For example, Luciano tells of opponent, John Cox’s failed attempt in running against Young in the last election, which others would look at as a newcomer daring to try and take the veterans position. By writing this, Luciano want to show his knowledge of all the candidates by pointing out the failures of the opponents and hopefully earning more votes for Young. But the writer also points out Young’s pointless idea of basically just spending government money just for an idea that would most likely not work.
In the social context, the article’s writer, Michael Luciano knows exactly who his readers are. His readers are the people who are off to vote. Luciano knows that his readers have some knowledge of the three candidates and their history and Luciano simply wants to remind his readers of the doings of the candidates. Hopefully the registered voters read this article before heading to the primary election and voting for whoever, but they take what they read in this article and let what they have read fill them with knowledge that they need before heading to the booths. This article allows the readers to make that choice for themselves because of Luciano’s writing showing both the good and the bad of the candidates.
While reading this article, even though it was somewhat short, was what I found difficult to read. At first glance reading this article, I thought it was a pro Don Young piece that showed only the flaws in his opponents. After reading the article for a second time and doing some research on the past events and ideas told, I realized this article is not just a puff piece but tells gives all three candidates a chance. If anything this article puts to light Young’s not so good ideas. I would recommend reading this article in a quiet space so you can focus and have some knowledge of politics.
